  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the sweet onions into bite-sized wedges.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour mixed with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt; another with buttermilk; and the last with panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Dip each onion piece in the flour mixture, then buttermilk, followed by coating it in panko.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the onion petals in small batches until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes), then drain on paper towels.
  6. Mix all dipping sauce ingredients together in a bowl.
